Keep Your Pool Crystal Clear With These Maintenance Tips

Being able to take a dip in your pool on a hot day can be quite a treat. Unfortunately, though, if you do not properly maintain your pool, you may walk out to your backyard and discover cloudy water or green growth on the walls. Properly caring for your pool can be a bit of work, but it ensures your pool is always ready to swim in.

Here are a few tips provided by Angi, formerly Angie’s List, to help you properly care for and maintain your pool:

Pool Chemicals

One of the most important elements of pool maintenance is ensuring your pool has the right combination of chemicals. Chemicals help keep the pool clean and sanitary. To prevent algae and to kill germs, the chlorine level in your pool should be at 1.5 ppm (parts per million). The pH level in your pool should be between 7.4 and 7.6. The alkalinity level in your pool should be between 80 and 120 ppm. You can use pool testing strips to check all these levels or bring your pool water to a pool supply store to test the water for you.

Pool Equipment

Your pool equipment, such as the pool’s filtration system, also plays a role in keeping your pool safe. You should routinely check any filter baskets you may have and remove any sticks, leaves, or other debris to ensure the system can work. Filtration systems also have a filter or two that need to be regularly cleaned. Finally, inspect all your pool equipment monthly to look for signs of leaks. If any leaks are noticed, you should have them repaired quickly.

Additional Care

On top of maintaining the chemicals in your pool and inspecting your pool equipment, you may need to do some physical labor to keep your pool clean. Use a skimmer net as needed to remove any leaves or bugs sitting on the surface of the pool. A scrubbing brush can be used to remove any algae that may be starting to form or to simply clean the sides of the pool. Some people use their skimmer net and brush before getting into the water, while others use these tools weekly.

Hiring a Pool Cleaner

Caring for a pool yourself takes time. If you do not have time or are struggling to keep the water in your pool crystal clear and clean, hiring a pool cleaner may be worthwhile. If you hire a pool cleaner, expect to pay approximately $80 to $100 per week. Shop around to find the best prices for pool care.

Proper pool maintenance makes your pool ready to use whenever you want to swim, while also ensuring it is clean and sanitary. Maintaining a pool can be a lot of work, but using your pool when you desire is the reward you get for all that hard work.
